University Police ‘optimistic’ evidence will lead to arrest

ALFRED — The University Police Department at Alfred State “is optimistic that scientific analysis may yield a conclusion” to arson fires that plagued a residence hall in November, the college said in a statement posted on its website Wednesday.

In its latest update on the arson probe and the search for suspects, Alfred State officials revealed that the high-tech investigation is utilizing federal criminal profiling, DNA, video surveillance and a “silent witness” system to generate leads.

Local law enforcement agencies as well as county and state fire investigators are probing three fires that were intentionally set over a seven-day period in November. The fires were reported on Nov. 8, Nov. 14 and Nov. 15 in Mackenzie North residence hall. Each of the fires were set in trash cans, college officials said, adding that paper and plastic

The Best True Crime Shows, Stories And Podcasts Of 2017

The holiday season can be a saccharine overload – consider the case of heiress Sunny von Bulow, who fell into a comatose state from which she’d never wake following a 1982 Christmas celebration. Authorities accused her husband Claus of attempting to murder her by injecting her with insulin. Claus maintained that Sunny had, like so many of us during the holiday festivities, merely overindulged – in her case with an eggnog/barbiturate cocktail. One jury found Claus guilty. Another found him innocent. Sunny died, still in a coma, in 2008. A very good movie, Reversal of Fortune, was made about the whole thing. It’s a much better movie than Love Actually, Miracle on 34th Street, or any other Christmas movie I can think of except maybe Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

TV HUNTER picks best 10 shows of 2017

TV Hunter picks his top 10 shows of 2017. Do you agree with his choices?

2017 has been a doozy.

Few will contest saying arrivederci to this year when the time comes to ring 2018. But before that ball drops, let’s take a moment to appreciate one of the bright spots of 2017 — the continuing abundance of great television.

Upward of 500 shows aired in the past 12 months and for anyone who tried to stay up to date on even a fraction of them, the binging exhaustion is real. Even choosing 10 of the best is a challenge when reflecting on all that flooded the air (and streaming) waves. But I’m here to give it a shot, one I will certainly revise many times as I write it and regret for months afterward.

Anyway, here are my top 10 shows of 2017:

10. “Playing House”

People ‘cheated’ on their partners with these Netflix shows

Netflix is notoriously tight-lipped about its viewership numbers, but the streaming giant has recently released some juicy information about the way people watch its shows. In its roundup of 2017’s most-binged shows, it included the top 10 shows that inspired people to “cheat” and watch ahead of their partners. So if you were watching “Narcos” with your significant other and suspected he or she of jumping ahead on the nights you worked late, you have something else to argue about during the holidays! Crime shows, in fact, led the top 10 in cheating. Here they are:

1. “Narcos”

The drama, now three seasons and counting, chronicles the Colombian drug trade and the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar. It’s filled with pulse-pounding confrontations between cartels and the DEA, so it’s no surprise viewers can’t wait to jump to the next chapter without their partners.

2. “13 Reasons Why”
