I didn’t have much interest in TNT’s new series “The Alienist” until I read a story about it in Entertainment Weekly.
It described the 1890s-set series’ main characters as forming “a sort of extrajudicial Justice League, racing the clock to find a ritualistic killer the local authorities seem in no rush to track down on their own time.”
I’m a sucker for team-ups in this vein, and seeing that in a period setting just seemed too good to pass up.
After reading it was based on a 1994 novel of the same name, I immediately bought the book, and by the time I tuned in for the series’ late January premiere, I was nearly finished with it — all 600 pages.
The book is told through the eyes of crime reporter John Schuyler Moore, who is reflecting back on a gruesome case — a series of murders of child prostitutes in 1890s New York
