This Mindhunter First Look Is Pure David Fincher Goodness

Jonathan Groff, Mindhunter

Mindhunter was announced back in 2015 as a serial killer profiler series from producers David Fincher and Charlize Theron. At the time, we were like “oh, that sounds cool,” and then we pretty much forgot about it. And then Netflix went and released the first look trailer for the series, which arrives in October.

It turns out we weren’t excited enough, because we forgot that David Fincher and serial killers go together like zip ties and black plastic garbage bags. Fincher, after all, directed Se7en and Zodiac, two of the best serial killer movies ever made, and Mindhunter is his take on the overdone but endlessly fascinating criminal profiler genre. This could be the elusive prestige procedural TV critics have long fantasized about.

Book review: Ice goes from compelling to chilling

THE ICE BENEATH HER

By Camilla Grebe

For two-thirds of its 350 pages, The Ice Beneath Her is another finely tuned, compelling and complex crime novel of the kind that’s become virtually compulsory from Scandinavian practitioners.

Swedish novelist Camilla Grebe, a couple of whose previous books were nominated for her country’s crime novel of the year awards, opens this one with a dead woman, identity unknown, whose body is found in the home of the controversial chief executive of a big clothing chain.

Jesper Orre is known as both a brutal boss and a womanizer, but neither factor accounts for murder or for the fact the dead woman in his hallway has been decapitated, her severed head propped up to face the front door.

He is, though, widely considered to be the killer, not least because he seems to have vanished even from the demands of his work.

The murder is sufficiently gruesome and puzzling on its

Elizabeth Heiter’s ‘Stalked’ grabs, doesn’t let you go

“Stalked” by University of Michigan graduate Elizabeth Heiter (Mira, $7.99) is the type of book that should come with a warning label: “Don’t start this if you have plans on doing anything else today.”

Her latest compelling novel is a riveting psychological thriller that takes you on a wild, emotional roller-coaster ride full of surprising plot twists and turns.

It’s the fourth paperback in her highly-acclaimed her profiler series, featuring biracial Evelyn Baine, who has quite a reputation for getting involved in bizarre cases for the FBI.

She is called in as an investigator for the Behavioral Analysis Unit, working on the disappearance of 17-year–old Haley Cooke.

The pretty cheerleader mysteriously vanished, pompons and all, from inside her high school in a small Virginia college town.

The taut tale opens with an intriguing premise in the brief prologue.

Cooke’s mother finds an ominous message hidden in a small notebook under her missing daughter’s mattress: “If you’re
