Exploring the realities of mass shootings after incident hits close to home

It almost happened here.

Last Tuesday afternoon, a lone gunman approached a Dollar General store in Cheektowaga. He wore an armored vest and camouflage and fired 20 rounds from an AR-15.

This story – or at least variations of it – has been told far too often across America in recent years. Mass shootings have shaken our country.

This week, it nearly shook us at home.

We have been here before. In 2010, a shooter killed four people outside the City Grill in Buffalo. A fifth person, who was paralyzed in that attack, died just last month.

Last week’s shooting turned out differently. By the professionalism and grace of the Cheektowaga Police Department and some nearby good Samaritans who chased the suspect by car, this story ends without death. One person at the store was hit by a bullet. Nobody died. The suspect, 29-year-old Travis J. Green, was quickly apprehended.

Japan vows to clamp down on suicide websites after ‘despicable’ serial murder of nine

TOKYO – Nearly two weeks after a man was arrested for killing and cutting up nine people, Japan has vowed a concerted response against ‘suicide websites’.

Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, who was nabbed on Oct 31, has confessed to preying on victims who expressed suicidal thoughts on social networking site Twitter, luring them with suicide pacts to die together.

But he reneged on this pact, killing and dismembering his victims whom he found using the hashtag “suicide recruitment”. Nine heads and 240 bones belonging to his nine victims – eight females and one male aged between 15 and 26 – were found at his Kanagawa apartment on Halloween.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Friday (Nov 10) said specific steps to clamp down on websites and social media sites that propagate suicide content will be announced next month.

“The use of Twitter – a social networking site that is difficult to keep an eye on

5 days after Las Vegas massacre many questions remain, few answers – WABC

The investigation into what drove Stephen Paddock to open fire on a music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday is into its fifth day, with ever-mounting questions and few answers.

Paddock, the lone suspect according to Las Vegas police, killed himself in the hotel suite he had rented on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino as police closed in on his location. With Paddock’s death, any clear answer for why he opened fire on the festival and killed 58 people and wounded 489 others may be lost.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, the public face of the investigation, has had few answers for why Paddock committed the crime. Authorities did not hold a press conference on Thursday, the first day since Sunday that one wasn’t held.

By Friday, although investigators had followed a thousand leads, there was still “no clear motive or reason why” Paddock carried out the mass

Why the ‘Criminal Minds’ Season 13 Premiere Took the Easy Way out After the Car Crash Cliffhanger

Criminal Minds ended season 12 with six members of the BAU — JJ, Prentiss, Rossi, Tara, Luke and Stephen — in a car crash, thanks to a trap set by Mr. Scratch, and not all of them survived. With a cliffhanger like that, in which most of the cast is put into a life-threatening situation, there have to be some sort of consequences. But were there enough?

Yes, the Team Lost a Member, But …

Picking up right where the finale left off, the premiere immediately let us know who survived, who was injured and who was missing after the truck barreled into the two SUVs. Stephen was dead. JJ, Rossi and Tara were injured. Luke was moving around well enough that we never see him needing any medical assistance. And Prentiss was missing.

Over the summer, it was announced that Damon Gupton would not be returning as Stephen Walker,
