Why It Was the Right Move for ‘Criminal Minds’ to Add Matt Simmons from ‘Beyond Borders’ in Season 13

Change is the norm for the BAU, especially in the more recent seasons of Criminal Minds, and season 13 saw the team gain a new member right after it lost one in Scratch’s finale cliffhanger trap. But fortunately, it looks like Matt Simmons is going to fit right in after the end of the IRT.

As Prentiss put it in “To a Better Place,” IRT’s loss is the BAU’s gain — and the move is a good one for Simmons as well.

Criminal Minds: Was the End of the Scratch Storyline Disappointing?

Simmons Was the BAU’s Fail-safe in the Scratch Investigation

The season premiere had to deal with the aftermath of the last season’s finale cliffhanger, and with Mr. Scratch responsible and very much in the picture, that had to be the focus of “Wheels Up.” And it was.

But at the same time, Matt Simmons had to be introduced as

Agent Matt Simmons Makes the Leap from ‘Beyond Borders’ to ‘Criminal Minds’ Mothership

As a member of the International Response Team on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Agent Matt Simmons (Daniel Henney) was used to packing his bags. Then he joined the original Criminal Minds’ Behavioral Analysis Unit in last week’s Season 13 premiere (Beyond Borders was canceled this summer).

His first proper assignment: finding a serial killer who stuffs his victims in suitcases. “At first, Matt was a shoulder to cry on, coming to the BAU’s aid when they needed him, providing strength and solidarity,” Henney says. “Now he’s going out into the field, breaking down doors and tackling bad guys. He’s also very good at profiling killers.”

Criminal Minds: How Beyond Borders’ Daniel Henney Will Join the Team in Season 13

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders TV show on CBS: (canceled or renewed?)

How will Agent Simmons make the transition from Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders to Criminal Minds? Recently, executive producer Erica Messer spoke with Entertainment Weekly about season 13 of the CBS TV show.

As reported earlier, former Beyond Borders star Daniel Henney has joined the cast of long-running crime drama, which also stars Joe Mantegna, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, A.J. Cook, and Kirsten Vangsness.

Messer told EW that Agent Simmons (Henney) is called in to help locate the BAU team after that season 12 cliffhanger ending:

Garcia [Kirsten Vangsness] has just learned that her team is in trouble. And the first person she calls is Agent Simmons. He drives them to the site of the last known signal from the team. They discover this horrific car accident. Once they see who is injured, they discover that someone

Who’s dead or alive?

When Criminal Minds wrapped its 12th season on CBS, six members of the BAU team jumped into a pair of SUVs on a wild goose chase to meet Reid. But what happened was a straight-up disaster: somebody sabotaged their tires to blow up right in the path of an 18-wheeler truck — and it’s unclear who, if any, survived the devastation.

In anticipation of the drama’s Sept. 27 start date, EW got some exclusive scoop from executive

‘Criminal Minds’ Adds ‘Beyond Borders’ Star as Series Regular for Season 13

The worlds of Criminal Minds and the Beyond Borders spinoff are about to collide.

Beyond Borders star Daniel Henney has joined the cast of the flagship series as a series regular for season 13.

Henney will reprise his role as Special Agent Matt Simmons, which he played for both seasons of the spinoff before it was canceled in May. Beyond Borders, which returned midseason and aired behind the mothership, averaged a low 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 with delayed viewing factored in.

Special Agent Simmons comes onboard the Behavioral Analysis Unit, after having worked with the team in the past, including helping with the release of Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) when he was arrested in Mexico last season.

Henney’s addition comes after the departure of Damon Gupton, who joined the CBS drama in the midst of season 12 following the abrupt exit of Thomas Gibson, who was let go

Should Criminal Minds season 13 offer up any Beyond Borders updates?

Tweet about this on TwitterShare on FacebookShare on TumblrPin on PinterestEmail this to someone

BordersIt’s already clear that Criminal Minds season 13 is airing on CBS for the 2017-18 season. Meanwhile, the Beyond Borders season is over. Its ratings couldn’t pass the test in season 2 enough for the network to pick it up for a third season.

While this may be the end of the show itself, that doesn’t necessarily mean the end for these characters. That is in part what makes the extended universe so interesting. The likes of Jack, Matt, and many other characters from Beyond Borders are still out
