Why the ‘Criminal Minds’ Season 13 Premiere Took the Easy Way out After the Car Crash Cliffhanger

Criminal Minds ended season 12 with six members of the BAU — JJ, Prentiss, Rossi, Tara, Luke and Stephen — in a car crash, thanks to a trap set by Mr. Scratch, and not all of them survived. With a cliffhanger like that, in which most of the cast is put into a life-threatening situation, there have to be some sort of consequences. But were there enough?

Yes, the Team Lost a Member, But …

Picking up right where the finale left off, the premiere immediately let us know who survived, who was injured and who was missing after the truck barreled into the two SUVs. Stephen was dead. JJ, Rossi and Tara were injured. Luke was moving around well enough that we never see him needing any medical assistance. And Prentiss was missing.

Over the summer, it was announced that Damon Gupton would not be returning as Stephen Walker,

‘Criminal Minds’ Recap: Season 13 Premiere — Walker Dies, Hotch …

In picking up the pieces of May’s calamitous, Scratch-orchestrated car crash, Criminal Minds‘ Season 13 premiere ultimately set in motion a chain of events that reached out and touched Aaron Hotchner, who has been tucked away in WITSEC.

Shortly after Scratch plowed an 18-wheeler into the BAU’s pair of SUVs, Luke was able to walk away from the scene of the assault unscathed, while Rossi (wobbly leg), JJ (glass shards in temple) and Tara (undisclosed injuries) were hospital-bound. Agent Stephen Walker was the lone fatality, while Prentiss was missing — having been spirited away by Scratch.

When Prentiss came to, she found herself in an ersatz hospital room, tended to by some sort of physician. Once the doc left, Scratch entered,

Criminal Minds star reveals ‘not everybody makes it’ in season premiere

Not everyone is going to survive the Criminal Minds season 13 premiere.

“The show picks up where it left off, which was at an intense moment, a car accident, and no, not everybody makes it,” star Adam Rodriguez tells EW.

When we last saw most of the BAU, the elusive Mr. Scratch (Bodhi Elfman) had trapped the team’s SUVs into being plowed by an 18-wheeler. The CBS series ended in a cliffhanger, leaving fans to wonder the fate of Alvez (Rodriguez), Prentiss (Paget Brewster), Rossi (Joe Mantegna), JJ (A.J. Cook), Lewis (Aisha Tyler), and Walker (Damon Gupton).

But while someone could be saying goodbye — Gupton isn’t returning to the series, making him a likely candidate for getting killed off in the season opener — the show will also welcome a new permanent team member: Daniel Henney, who starred on the canceled

Criminal Minds: Ten Things to Know About the Season 13 Premiere

The Season 12 finale of Criminal Minds had the BAU team rushing to capture the illusive Mr. Scratch when both SUVs that they are riding in are T-boned in a lethal accident that may not have been an accident at all.

From the promo for the Season 13 premiere, it can be seen that Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) was seriously injured and taken to the hospital. Since she was sitting on the passenger side, she must have been among the most severely injured, so her fate remains in limbo, as does that of the rest of the team David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook),  Dr. Tara Lewis (Aisha Tyler), Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) and Stephen Walker (Damon Gupton).

Safe are Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) and Dr. Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler), who were not in the SUVs, so it is up to them to carry on the hunt for

‘Criminal Minds’ Premiere Title ‘Wheels Up’ Fuels #NoHotchNoWatch Ire [Opinion]

The Criminal Minds premiere, titled “Wheels Up,” airs tonight at 10 p.m. This Wednesday is the end of a countdown that started a week ago.

Have Criminal Minds fans been counting down the days until they could see the premiere? It’s possible Matthew Gray Gubler’s fans are, but in another camp, a certain protest group has been counting the days to their massive Twitter party. For the past seven days, a countdown to blast off has appeared under the hashtag #NoHotchNoWatch.

The #NoHotchNoWatch protest of Criminal Minds Season 13 has been highly planned and anticipated. As Criminal Minds begins Season 13 without Thomas Gibson, #NoHotchNoWatch is planning a huge Twitter party for the exact time slot.

The Criminal Minds episode “Wheels Up” will air Wednesday night, and that title has inflamed the already growing annoyance of Thomas Gibson fans who support #NoHotchNoWatch. Are Criminal Minds writers throwing shade? Are they taunting Thomas Gibson
